This is a weird one, but...basically any shippy fic that is *not* an AU where the characters' ENTIRE canon relationship/friendship is retroactively destroyed so that the writers can replace the entire thing with some romantic storyline that doesn't spring from the canon at all, because in the fic in question, everything we saw in canon was a lie.

For example, I started reading this one slash fic where sometime chronologically before the pilot episode, the characters used to have sex, but then one character broke the other character's heart and gay-panicked out of the relationship nastily and ever since, before the show started, and during the entire duration of the show, the wonderful friendship they shared in canon has been a big lie -- one character has always been a hypocritical lying repressed dick who pretends nothing is wrong, and the other character has always been a heartbroken, closed-off, lying doormat who resents the other character to death but still hangs around with him. So their entire canon friendship was just them pretending to be friends.

Like, I'm sorry -- WHY WOULD I CARE ABOUT READING A FIC ABOUT THIS SHIP IF THE ENTIRE FRIENDSHIP THAT MADE ME SHIP THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS A LIE? Like, what the hell is the basis for rooting for these fucking nasty piece-of-shit assholes who do not share anything remotely resembling the friendship that made me ship them in the first place to get together?

If it was an AU, that would be a totally different thing. Or if it was some deconstruction-fic, that would at least be understandable. But it was just "yeah, that friendship? They weren't actually friends at all and haven't liked each other for years. But they still seem behave friends in canon because...um...the writers made them. And you're still supposed to ship them for the exact same reasons you shipped them in canon (because I won't give you any alternate reasons) even though that canon is perflunkt in this fic because...um...uh...just because!"

And yet somehow, this sort of thing isn't some rare occurrence. It happens all the time, in multiple fandoms and multiple ships. I really don't understand.

I don't think this is a weird one. Makes perfect sense to me.

I sorta meant "weirdly specific" at first but then I remembered it *wasn't* specific at all and the whole post kinda morphed into a rant :D
