Characters watching/becoming fans of popular tv series/movies.

I can ignore it if it's just a mention or a character making a pop culture reference when it fits, but fics where any plot vanishes to focus a few thousand of words on the characters watching/discussing tv series/movies making me backbutton asap even if I had liked the fic before that.

Or a character listens to nickleback songs, usually with lyrics pasted into the middle of things as if Tolkien wrote fanfics with elves who had fetish for soft-rock.

NGL, I would totally read a fic about a band of Tolkien elves with a fetish for soft rock. If the author actually got into the reasons for why soft rock suddenly popped up in Middle Earth.

I'm thinking it would be a little like the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy", but with an iPod or a boombox instead of a coke bottle.

This is awful, but...I now kind of want to write a fic about a character getting overly invested in fandom. Other characters would be like, "THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU" and the central character would be like, "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND MY OTP IS A SHINING BEACON OF HOPE AND IT SPEAKS TO ME ON A PROFOUND LEVEL WHY ARE YOU JUDGING ME I HATE YOU."

But what if it happens in canon? Like, for example, the main character of the Laundry Files series, in the most recent book, is required by his job to read a shit ton of vampire novels, which were explicitly stated to include Jim Butcher and Anne Rice. (It makes sense in context.) I would genuinely like to see Bob crash a book club and rant about how vampires don't work that way.

TBH I don't even like it in canon, but I can stand it as long as the canon isn't super focused on that.

On the other hand, I can't stand at all The Avengers spending hours watching/discussing Star Trek/Doctor Who/Supernatural/insert something else here.
(And Bucky the Disney fan is even worse).

I actually enjoy that, as long as it's the whole entire point of the fic (and I like the thing that they're talking about). As a digression in a longer fic, it really annoys me.
