I can't remember what my first trek ship was. My first Trek was DS9 so maybe...Garak/Bashir? Odo/Quark?

But I feel the same way about juggernaut ships. Even when I like them. I just get tired of them and the way all their fic is the same.

I get that way with shipping in general too. I love shipping, but sometimes I want to discuss other aspects of the show.

To be honest, though, I feel like generic fic isn't just a problem in juggernaut ships.

I've tried getting into Spuhura, but it just feels really…repetitive to me. It's just a whole lot of Academy and baby fics. And it feels like there's basically NOTHING that's the slightest bit dark, evil, or twisted. Maybe I just haven't been looking in the right places, though.

Oh yeah. I imagine any pairing with a sizable following has that problem. I remember back in the day, when I was in DBZ fandom, people would apologize and say "I've never written this pairing before, sorry if I'm not doing it right." The problem was that instead of using canon as their foundation, they were using other fic. Not that there's anything wrong with liking those popular fics or wanting to write stories that have those tropes or what have you, but I think it stems from insecurity and a fear of going against popular interpretations and norms.

Maybe because it's the largest het ship? I feel the same way, although there are a few darker fics and there are some decent K/S fics with a dark Spuhura dynamic. I understand why so many authors shy away from writing certain dynamics for this pairing, but I wish people could visit more of the other tropes for this couple.

With Kirk/Spock for me, there is too much hurt/comfort fic. It's everywhere and not always labeled that way. I can no longer be moved by Tarsus, George's death or "shitty mom" Winona. I do not feel sorry for Kirk and I wish there were fewer stories that took this approach, or I wish there were more that didn't.

Holy crap the hurt/comfort fic. I'll admit it's a guilty pleasure, but I find a lot of authors just don't know how to handle Tarsus competently. I actually haven't read any "shitty mom" Winona fics (although abusive stepfather is a common trope).

I think part of that has to do with Chris Pine's Kirk constantly getting beaten up in both films. And then dying. His Kirk is put through the wringer and I think a lot of fic writers are desperate to offer the snuggles. But it does get to be a bit…much.

I've noticed a lot of these tropes are common in McKirk fiction too!

With Spuhura, I kind of hope it gets better, but I'm not optimistic. There's just sooooo much baggage with that pairing unfortunately.
