If you want other characters/pairings to get love, then get cracking! Write fics, draw fanart, bake cookies shaped like them, whatever. You're not gonna accomplish anything by hating on the big ship -- they're popular for a reason (most of the time, at least).

(Anonymous) 2014-08-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
K/S is one of those ships where I can totally see why it's as hugely popular as it is. But I get why it would be frustrating to have it be so overwhelmingly dominant. I think the structure of the show and then the subsequent elevation of the K/S relationship as a pop culture cornerstone kind of made it inevitable, though, in a way.

It's not that simple

(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)

I have tried to steer discussion in my fandom away from the main pairing, which I don't ship (but don't exactly hate either - it's just a very boring to me) and toward other characters, whom I think are 10 times more interesting than one of the characters in the pairing. The other characters were also on the show a lot longer than the character in the pairing that I find uninteresting, so there's more to discuss about them. I've also written fanfic featuring the other characters.

No bites! No one seems to be willing to discuss anything but the main pairing, or read fanfic that doesn't feature the main pairing (but does feature those characters, who aren't paired but are friends). It's terribly frustrating, so I have thought "What's the point of wasting my time when this fandom is so obsessed with just one pairing?" and given up. I'll still read fanfic, but I get so tired of other, very interesting and wonderful, characters increasingly being ignored.

One thing that surprised me when I started watching TOS was how little Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov got to do. There might be an episode once in a while that featured them, but often they were simply doing their usual work business. It truly was centered around Kirk, Spock, and McCoy as a show -- which is a pretty strong sign of the times. For me, I guess it was surprising mostly because of how iconic all seven characters were. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have been as surprised as I was.

But…yeah…Spirk is definitely HUGE. Personally, I could never see Bones and Kirk as anything other than friends (except, weirdly, in the reboot). But Spock and McCoy definitely had a lot of tension that could be spun into a romantic pairing.

I was always a Spock/McCoy girl myself. We do exist!

I think that's the problem with pretty much every juggernaut ship, tbh. they take over whole fandoms. And it's even worse if it's not your ship.

This is one thing I appreciate about the fandom for the new movie. The pairing preferences seem wider, though Spock/Kirk is still the most popular. That being said, I do ship Spock/Kirk in TOS, though I ship Kirk/McCoy and Spock/Uhura in the new movies. But I agree that it would be nice to see fics of other pairings

This is also how I feel about the Voyager fandom. It is overwhelmingly filled with Janeway/Chakotay fics, which is a pairing I'm not a fan of.

[personal profile] litalex 2014-08-07 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Really? The ones I've been able to find are all Tom Paris/Chakotay. (Well, that and a bit of Paris/Harry.)

The reboots are a bit better...

(Anonymous) 2014-08-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Kirk/McCoy is actually MORE popular than Spirk -- at least, it's comparable. Probably because Kirk and Spock hated each other in the first film. Although STID definitely caused an uptick in the Kirk/Spock fiction.

There's also Spuhura. Although I've noticed that there's not that many fics exclusively about them -- they're usually a side pairing in Kirk/McCoy.

Chulu is another popular side pairing (I think it might be in TOS as well).

(Anonymous) 2014-08-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
... My first TOS ship was Spock/McCoy, so you can probably guess that I'm not going to argue here. Well, okay, I shipped McCoy/everybody, more or less, but that didn't really help either, since ships outside of the main trio (with the possible exception of Sulu/Chekov) seem just as difficult to come across. My TOS grumbling, let me show you it.

So, yes. Fandoms with juggernaut pairings in general tend to annoy me, even when I do happen to ship it, because they tend to get really, really same-ish after a while. Even within the fic, probably because there are only so many times people can write first-time fics with the same characters before you can pretty much predict fics note-for-note. It's like superhero origin stories for every reboot. There's some enjoyment to be had in seeing what spin is going to be put on it this time, but really it's all still the same old story. Doesn't help that juggernaut pairings seem to attract a lot of the same tropes as well.

I will make a possible exception, here, for McShep in SGA, if only because SGA fandom appeared to be batshit insane and made up tropes on the spot that then bounced around fandom and mutated into even weirder shit. I am remembering the were-penguins in particular, here (though that one was McKay/Carson, I'm almost positive). I didn't ship McShep (McKay/Zelenka all the way), but I can't say the tropes were boring.

Since I have only seen the movies (plus 1-2 original episodes), I absolutely loathe Spock/Kirk. Just, blech. I just ship Bones/Anyone.

I can't remember what my first trek ship was. My first Trek was DS9 so maybe...Garak/Bashir? Odo/Quark?

But I feel the same way about juggernaut ships. Even when I like them. I just get tired of them and the way all their fic is the same.

I get that way with shipping in general too. I love shipping, but sometimes I want to discuss other aspects of the show.

I'm laughing at myself right now because I know it shows my age so much, but I just can't with "Spirk". It's K/S damnit. LOL. I don't mind most fandom "smush" names, but I'll never be able to adopt "Spirk".

It does really, really suck to not ship the most popular pairing in fandom and I do think there should be a bit more variety just so everyone is satisfied, but I'm also a huge fan of Kirk/Spock. It's the only pairing I read involving either character, so I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the ease of finding fic. I will agree that after you've read a certain number of fic for a pairing, often things start to feel repetitive, but that's when I go read something else and give the pairing or fandom a break.

Sorry, man. :/ I wish everyone could get what they want out of fandom, but it never happens.

So much in agreement, dear god.

Though I will say Kirk/Bones gave that ship a run for it's money after ST'09 came out~

Something I've Noticed

Spock seems to be more of the fandom bicycle for the original series while Kirk seems to play this role in the alternate universe. Anyone agree? Or have any idea why this might be?

TOS fans who refer to the ship as "Spirk" make me cry.

No offense to you, OP. It's just a predilection of mine. But Kirk/Spock is so old that attaching newfangled namesmushes to the ship feels all kinds of weird to my ear.

Oh man OP, I couldn't agree more. And it's not just the pairing's prevalence in fanfiction that gets old, but the entire fandom's fixation on the Kirk/Spock relationship. For example, take The Search for Spock. It's my favorite Trek film because it shows how much the Enterprise crew were like a family, but all you will here from fandom is how the movie is all about Kirk/Spock, because Kirk risked the Enterprise and his career to get Spock back. Which is true, of course, but do people forget that the entire bridge crew also risked their careers and faced future court martial to rescue Spock? Because that's how important he was to everybody? And that McCoy also faced death to put Spock's spirit back into his body at the end of the movie? It's not just Kirk/Spock, people.

I've seen Trek but I'm not a big fan, at least not big enough to really ship anybody. My sisters are big K/S fans though. On the subject of juggernaut ships, I get the annoyance because sometimes you get weary of seeing the same two names all the time, but that said, my biggest ships (the one I wish was canon and the one I'm totally thrilled is canon) are the "big ships" in the fandom. There's really only one ship I love that is unpopular. It's not that I start reading fic before consuming the media and it's not that I look for the biggest ship, it just turns out that when I search for the fandom, I find that the ship I favor is the "big ship". I think that's because I tend to ship pairings that, canon or non-canon, have a lot of canon support in terms of scenes shared by the pairing. Sometimes the biggest ship is the biggest ship because the characters spend a shit ton of time together and because the series/movies spend a ton of time on developing that relationship. And sometimes the big ship is an appealing figment of fandom's imagination.
