Why can't I see it?

A) This is a family show (or was supposed to be, before the reboot) about Wacky Fun (and not-so-fun) Hijinks Thru Time & Space. Not Space Opera #1697898456534 with the serial numbers barely filed off.

B) The Doctor is 900 years old. Also, from Gallifrey. Two hearts. Grown in a vat. Nowhere in any of the episodes prior to the reboot, was Gallifrey shown to have any kind of family structure, nuclear or otherwise.

C) Not everything is about sex in relationships. TV and fanfic has ruined you, OP.

D) I hate the reboot with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. Why am I even arguing with this secret?

Find one of the versions of "The Unearthly Child" (original, novelisation, evs) and get back to us.

I'm sorry, that was dickish.

I kind of agree with OP, though. That ship was teased pretty hard, even if in the end the Doctor was really almost both their weird uncle and their kid. I can see how fans can get attached to it.
