Addressed only to those of you who don't like or ship het, and/or don't like reading het fic: why don't you like it?

Not a rhetorical question -- I mean, what are your personal reasons for not liking it?

If I like het but only with certain caveats can I still answer? Because I might have a lot of thoughts on this you could possibly find interesting.

Not OP, but I say go for. Hearing the caveats would be interesting too.

I don't read het, and my reason is pretty simple. I'm a gay dude so I don't find women attractive, and my preferred genre of fic is m/m fluffy romance.

As a bi dude, similar. I'm bombarded by straight stuff and straight stuff being assumed default all day otherwise, so I look for slash in fic. Most of my fandom friends assume I'm gay. Fandom is my outlet for that.

It's everywhere else. All the nonfandom media I consume is het. If it shows up in a slash or femslash fic I'm reading as a side pairing, whatever, but I never go looking for it. Fandom is for all the stuff that didn't happen in canon, right?

Is it wrong that sometimes I love things because they ARE canon? :P But yeah, I can see that. I don't really have any slash ships, but there's things I could kind of see even though it would never happen. (Though there have been male characters I assumed were gay until proven otherwise. Like Ryan and Esposito from Castle - seriously, I thought they were supposed to be gay. But I actually like them better as brothers-in-arms.)

It's possible to love the canon for canon, then go looking for what-could-have-been in fic. That's the whole purpose of fic to me, exploring what isn't canon. Since het is usually the canon in most of the things I watch or read, I look for other things in fandom.

I like het, but I strongly veer towards slash in fic, art and porn consumption.

Some of my reasons are pretty shallow:

- two hot guys are better that one.
- Two penises are better than one
- I love teh buttsechs (and yes, you can do it in het, too, but then it becomes almost a kink.

Then there's other,more complex reasons.

- I like fucked-up fic sometimes, and on an emotional level I'm sort of more okay with guys suffering, being tortured, or even being in non-con scenario's. I know this would be a problematic distinction in real life, but in fic it works for me.

- Similarly, I sort of like characters that are mentally fucked up, and by making them both guys, it sort of creates a distance, and it makes it hit less close to home (though it's a fine line as it is), but basically I want to avoid that sort of fic feeling too blatantly like an insert for my own relationship.

Much the same here - I like romance, but I don't like the crap power dynamics that go with het romance. As a straight female I'm not really interested in f/f; hence m/m.

Two reasons, mostly similar to others'.

One, I'm a lesbian, so if I'm going in for smut, reading slash is escapism. I don't have that little part of my brain that checks for realism, because I don't have a dick and won't ever fuck a dude. So I'll never have to go, "Oh no, I wouldn't ever like that to be done to me."

The other is simply that I find het boring. It's everywhere. I have no emotional investment in it because het pairings seem essentially interchangeable to me (the other reason I can't stand romantic comedies).

I "don't like het"... as in, I don't care to go out of my way to read it, don't get passionate about het pairings and definitely don't wank off to it. I don't know, I'm gay? I just like f/f or m/m, it's more aesthetically pleasing and inherently sexier to me. I guess something could be said about me not liking the gender roles that het relationships often fall into, and I don't like feeling forced to identify with the woman (even if I don't actively want to), but mostly it's just because I have more interest, in every sense of the word, in gay pairings.

I never wind up shipping het pairings in fandoms, that's all. I read a lot of original romance novels otherwise, because when I want het romance, I want nothing but the het romance. The romantic het pairings that tend to show up in shows or movies I watch often feel forced, like the creators felt they had to have a romance. Most of the time it just comes off like hero gets the girl/all anger is just playing hard to get/other cliches that I don't like mixed with my sci-fi, fantasy, crime dramas, what-have-you. So, anything I'm shipping is explicitly non-canon, and that usually means slash or femslash.

I don't like to read het fic or even ship het pairings because if I want some het porn, I'll just go fuck my husband.
