I absolutely believe that was set up to indicate how important Rose was to the show, and that it's a true representation of the Rose era in that sense. Whether you want to use the words 'main character' or not, it gives a sense of how much each character matters in the show. I think that's true whatever your thoughts of Rose as a character - I don't hate her personally, but you can't deny that she's given a huge amount of significance in the show.

Yep. Pretty much this.

All right, I haven't seen much Doctor Who but... aren't all the companions important in the show? Isn't that way all the promotional type photos for this series frequently feature both the Doctor and whoever is the companion at the moment? So if I Google "Doctor Who + [name here]" wouldn't I find a bunch of similar photos like:

I'm not sure how the Rose photo is more significant than any other.

Rose was the first New Who companion and the first on tv to be portrayed as romantic with the Doctor (there was a kiss on the tv movie with the Eighth Doctor). A lot of fans think that first=most important and that she is more important in-universe too.

Or that the show / RTD treat her as more important.

Yeah. There's no denying that Rose is portrayed as being the most important bestest companion right up until Eleven.

The kiss was with Nine? unless I'm missing something
philstar22: (Doctor Who: Eight)

No, there was a kiss between Eight and the companion who was on his movie (never seen it, so don't know her name). That was the first actual Doctor Who kiss, though there really wasn't much romance in the movie. Nine and Rose was the first full-blown Doctor romance.

Well, for starters, talking about the pictures specifically, the Martha ones and the Leela one have the Doctor and companion at the same height - they don't correct for the height difference the way that the Rose photo OP is talking about. And the Clara picture has the Doctor both taller and kind of standing in front of and more prominent than the Doctor. So all of those are actually distinctly different from the Rose picture, where they're on the same level in terms of height and depth. And then you're left with that one Donna promo pic, and I think it's mostly just that's how the two of them look when you take a medium picture of them standing next to each other - note that they do have a height difference, they're just relatively close in height compared to EG Martha. Whereas in Rose, they specifically put frame it to put the two characters on the same level.

Second, talking about companions in general - yes, every companion is important. Every single one, absolutely. But Rose plays a role that not every companion does. She just owns a lot of the show, and there's a lot of weight and primacy given to her reactions to things, her judgments, her emotions - basically, in general, to her story as a whole. Certainly way more than any other companion before her. Arguably more than for any other after her.

SA - and I want to be clear that I don't think this is, like, some dark conspiratorial shit, or whatever, or that it's some plot by RTD to destroy Doctor Who, or that it means that Rose is the best companion ever, or any of that.

I think that RTD had a new series to sell to a group of people, both a cult crowd who knew about it and a mass audience that didn't know much about it, and I think one of the ways he wanted to do that was to emphasize the role of the companion more. And I think he did it in the story, and I think that's where the promo photo comes from.

Usually people compare her to how Eleven's companions are portrayed. And I can kind of see it with Clara, but that's a nitpick from someone who doesn't have much interest in New Who.

It's not. It's about the value RTD places on his women as opposed to Moffat. Rose was just the example in that specific post. Pictures of Ten and Martha and Ten and Donna are similar.

yep

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed the first season - and particularly the first episode and the promotional material - was set up that way intentionally so audiences who weren't so familiar with Classic Who could use her as a gateway character (and also not be completely adrift when Nine regenerated so soon).

It echoed "An Unearthly Child" in that sense, as we met Susan, Barbara, and Ian before we met the Doctor and were introduced to the Doctor through Ian and Barbara's POV as they snooped around.

It doesn't have to mean anything beyond that, although at this point, I do not have the energy to care if anyone wants to use it as evidence that Rose is the most important ever for all time the end.
