I absolutely believe that was set up to indicate how important Rose was to the show, and that it's a true representation of the Rose era in that sense. Whether you want to use the words 'main character' or not, it gives a sense of how much each character matters in the show. I think that's true whatever your thoughts of Rose as a character - I don't hate her personally, but you can't deny that she's given a huge amount of significance in the show.

So agreed. Rose is awesome. So is every other companion. She is one of many and not unique. Yes, she was the first New Who companion and then one who introduced many people to Doctor Who. But she isn't more special or more important than any other companion.

That being said, bashing of her is equally annoying. She isn't evil or selfish. She didn't help accelerate the breaking down between universes. She didn't "rape" the TARDIS when she became the Bad Wolf (yes, I've actually heard that one).

To be fair, your points about how it's obviously the man, because only a man would be cast as the Doctor, isn't necessarily right considering that a large chunk of the viewers of the new series probably didn't know much (or even anything) about what Doctor Who was about before that. To them the Doctor could have easily been the woman.

I think a lot of this type of criticism started when we got promo material like this which then caused people to go back and look at previous promo pictures. And then there's been a resurgence since we got this promo pic for series 8.

And like... placement and size of characters in promo pictures DO mean something.

There's something to be said for the equal prominence of the characters in that promo picture - it definitely is telling the viewer that these character are both going to be important (whereas a pic of Chris E front and centre with Billie behind and off to the side would clearly have signposted a main chara/side-kick relationship). I don't think it's a groundbreaking thing, but it's not like no thought goes into promo pics either.

Also, your Doctor point doesn't quite hold water because some viewers of New Who weren't that familiar with the old series or its casting traditions, so wouldn't necessarily assume that the guy was The Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
That tumblr post is operating under the assumption that in 2004 the British public had no idea who either Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston were.

One of those actors was a former pop idol just beginning to break into acting with small roles on tv and some low-tier movies. And the other was a stage star with lots of experience, including the lead in several major indie films-- and who had also just starred in RTD's most recent project before Doctor Who.

Which one do you think sounds like the Doctor and which one is the companion? I mean really.

This is not to say DW wouldn't cast an unknown as the Doctor, they obviously did with Smith, but at the outset of their brand new show? Not a chance. They had no guarantee the revival would be a success. Regardless of the actors' genders, the Doctor is the more challenging role and I would assume the more experienced actor to hold that role.

This kinda reminds me of these posts that take a scene from some show and is like "Can we talk about how IMPORTANT this is" and then goes on to inject a reading of social justice stuff in a way that just makes you go "whu?"

Or they take something, take it out of context and make it fit their agenda. I remember a particular instance of this where someone took a scene from Danny Phantom where one of the villains, Desiree said something like "No man may lay a hand on me unless I wish it" and turned it to be about sexual assault when the context of the scene was the male protagonist stopping her from killing innocents. But there were still a bunch of people who bought it and said things like "rape is how Danny saves the day" and shit. It just pissed me off SO much.

Like...really all that scene even proved was "...okay so she has hang-ups about dudes. Not surprising giving her canon past as a harem girl but it's certainly not implying what you seem to think it is."

and there was this other thing from Lilo and Stich that was like "can we talk about how sad it is that Lilo , the only native Hawaiian there ((citation needed)) was bullied out of her hula class about HER culture by white girls" and they got chewed out by an actual Hawaiian person about how wrong they were.

Also that scene (also from Lilo and Stitch ) where Nani gets fired from her job at the Luau (sp?) and makes a comment about 'who wants to work at this fake luau anyway' and some tumblrina's came in stating that it was a ~statement~ about how real Hawaiians saw white people luaus. and most of us are just like..."um...no she's saying that because she's angry and upset about being fired from the ONLY job she had when she was trying to support her sister."

Why does everything have to be a statement?

I hate this about tumblr--not just the overanalysing, but the fact that it makes itself worse by virtue of the way it's used. Someone can straight up lie about something, but there's no effective way to dispel it. If you reblog it with a correction, it has such a slim chance of being seen and actually reaching the people who were fed the lie.

With stuff like this, there's such an obvious, simple countermeasure: all of the pictures of promos with Nine and Rose that DON'T have them in this approved posture and position. Like this one (http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/doctor-rose-series-1-promo.jpg) or this (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6FNYbh5HRag/UHX3_fCPo8I/AAAAAAAAC1A/mKCV1HpaQR4/s1600/rose+7.jpg). I mean, I can cherry pick my findings like that too.

Not to mention, I really, really don't have a problem with a show called Doctor Who featuring the Doctor in the forefront. Especially when he's the person that must ultimately carry the show.

Actually, this was something I noticed about the promo photos even before the Moffat-era ones started getting skeevy. It wasn't even in the context of Nine and Rose, it was in a conversation about female gaze and Tennant's body language--a lot of the RTD era promo shots have the Doctor and the companion posed with equal prominence, directness, etc. Even in the ones where one of them is posed at an angle/glancing sidelong at the camera/in an off-kilter stance, it's almost as likely to be the Doctor as the companion. It's just as true for Martha and Donna as it is for Rose. And that's... not really "omg look at him staring blankly into the camera, that blink in frame 3 conveys so much emotion!" Tumblr overanalysis, it's a valid observation. The butthurt framing as proof that the entire Moffat era is awful and RTD is a saint is kind of obnoxious, but if you're going to start drawing comparisons, yeah, the promo images have been getting pretty sketch, especially since that awful one for Asylum of the Daleks.

You know, before I started looking into Doctor Who, I didn't know the Doctor was a man, so given how they're positioned in the photo, I wouldn't have known who was the doctor and who wasn't.

And I disagree - there's a lot that goes into ads and what the images suggest to people. The placing of the characters is important.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Just because the characters get equal focus in the shot doesn't mean you can't still totally tell who is The Main Character. Which you can in this picture. You can totally tell.

It's not about Rose being a special snowflake queen, it's about RTD respecting the women in his series more than Moffat does. Rose is just used as an example in this particular post. I've seen similar posts plenty of times with pictures featuring Donna and Martha as well.

Agreed, anon! I'm so fucking sick of the 'revolutionary' bullshit people crap on about on Tumblr. They're so desperate to make themselves sound intelligent.

I wouldn't hate Rose were it not for fandom constantly putting her on a pedastool.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I would argue that the Doctor is not the protagonist of Doctor Who.

He's the character who holds the show together. And he's the hero (YMMV on heroism levels). But he's not the person with whom the audience is supposed to identify.

That's the companion. In this case, Rose Tyler.

So I'd say it is nice that they're presented on an equal footing because well... they are supposed to be of equal importance. That's one of the messages of Doctor Who: that ordinary people can be just as extraordinary as a space alien with two hearts and the power to travel space and time.

That's my thoughts, anyway.
