I think a lot of this type of criticism started when we got promo material like this which then caused people to go back and look at previous promo pictures. And then there's been a resurgence since we got this promo pic for series 8.

And like... placement and size of characters in promo pictures DO mean something.

I just kinda assumed that the first one was because of the relationship he had with young Amy; protector-like.

And, honestly, I always figure Clara gets in the background because of so many complaints about her as a companion. Which sucks because she's my favorite.

Not that there isn't a ton of problems with this show, but I think there is room for several interpretations for the photos...

I don't watch it so I'd assumed that it was because some serious shit had gone down in canon and they were cliffhanging about the woman dying or living.

This makes a lot of sense - good context.

Although, I want to play Devil's Advocate here and point out that the second one introduces a new Doctor, while the companion is returning, as opposed to the pic of Nine and Rose in the secret where both Doctor and companion were brand new.

Oddly, both of those pictures kind of annoy me, more than the Rose one. I mean the first one has damsel-in-distress all over, which actually makes me less interested in the content. And in the promo pic for series 8 the girl looks really... odd and out of place, to me, like she randomly wandered in. She doesn't feel significant.
Somebody linked a few more promotional pictures upthread, and I think several of them did a good job making the women seem important and active in terms of how they were placed - it felt more balanced to me.
