Can someone please tell me what the point of these voting polls are? Do they actually do or mean anything?

If you're talking about internet popularity contests in general, I can't help you, but this particular poll began in 2012 when EW snubbed Sterek as well as a bunch of other same-sex couples in one of their shipping polls. In response, AfterElton created a shipping poll just for m/m couples, and AfterEllen did the same for f/f couples. Apparently it has now become an annual tradition.

No meaning. Some fans convince themselves that if their pairing wins, the show runners will take note of its popularity and make it canon but it's just a pipe dream. Honestly, it's supposed to be a fun popularity contest for kicks.
