(Anonymous) 2014-08-08 05:14 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, but unlike the other things, this is actually a pretty easy fix. Drawn/animated porn WILL solve the problem of exploitation and rape because it removes the physical people from the arena.
And as people have said, live action porn specifically isn't much of a necessity of life, it's a nice thing people use to get their rocks off. Even if it's only a symptom, the porn industry is worth billions, and getting rid of it could actually change the lives of some of the women exploited by it.
Re: ...what does Obama have to do with this? And who/what else do you boycott?
b.) Saying "it's not a necessity" seems to imply we should just get rid of every industry in which some people are exploited. Where is the line on that one? We don't need imported fruits and vegetables, so we should stop getting them because child labor. We don't need entertainment like musicians, TV shows, movies, etc. so we should stop consuming those because of how many people get exploited within those industries. Why bother having things like, say, amusement parks when those workers are often underpaid labor?
c.) Exploitation and rape would still be around even without the porn industry - it would just shift to somewhere else, possibly somewhere where women couldn't at least "get a little something back" via getting paid for it. And again, where is the line on that? At one point do we get rid of an industry or organization because there is too much sexual assault? 1 in 3 female soldiers are raped - should we get rid of the military? Or should we just get rid of women in the military, 'removing them from the arena'?
d.) If we take a step closer to reality for a moment, there really is no getting rid of the live-action porn industry. Trying to get rid of it would just drive it underground, where women would be even more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Better to do the opposite - work to bring it further "above ground" and into the mainstream, so performers and other porn workers* will have much more recourse and legitimacy in pursuing abusers and ending exploitation.
* = porn stars are actually only a comparatively small part of the porn industry; for every single, pair, or handful of performers in a given pornographic film, there are at least a dozen people involved in things like filming, editing, pre- and post-production, marketing, distribution, etc. Hell, a friend of mine does special effects for superhero porn, while another did a porn movie with just himself in it (masturbation porn) and there were still multiple other people involved in "getting it out there".
