nayrt, but I can see where they're coming from. As it's a talent competition, you should judge the contestants based on that alone. Talent. By providing "tragic backstories," you're introducing something that will sway the voters. Say there's two singers, Adam and Charlie. Adam is an amazing singer, is confident, and is just a swell guy. Charlie is a good singer, but not as good as Adam. He doesn't have the same range, and he doesn't seem very sure of himself on stage. But his mother recently passed away from cancer, his father left him as a baby, and now he has to take care of his three younger siblings, which he's hoping to accomplish by winning the competition. Adam, on the other hand, has no problems in his life and is surrounded by a loving family. The voters may feel sorry for Charlie and vote for him instead of Adam, even though Adam is the better singer.

They seem to forget that winning this competition gets you a show in Vegas. You're picking someone you would like to see preform there, not the one you feel the most sorry for. Who's to say that the winner is confident enough to preform there, let alone has enough material to maintain a show?

ayrt

I should have said more in my first comment. I don't think it's wrong to judge based on talent. Contestants SHOULD be judged on their talent and not their backgrounds. But I think it's terrible to refuse to support someone for having a sob story. After all, that's not actually judging based on talent either, is it? It's no different from supporting the person with the saddest background.
