Well, as someone who watched the reboot films first, I was blown away by how much more I started to like and care about the characters after I started watching the original show. Even characters like Uhura, who had way more screen time in the movies. The characters from the original show actually seemed to care about each other, and you genuinely get invested in their friendships. And you can believe that they're the best Starfleet has to offer. Like, for example, my favorite character in the reboot(and the original series) is Bones, and I still think Karl Urban does a great job as him, but I seriously wish the reboot movies actually let him smile and occasionally act like the kindhearted doctor his character is supposed to be under his cranky exterior.

Are you me!?

I feel exactly the same way! I saw the 2009 film first and HATED the main characters and then I watched TOS years later and totally fell in love with them -- within the first episode even!

And YES -- a THOUSAND times yes to "the characters from the original show actually seemed to care about each other"! It was one thing I despised about the 2009 film -- everyone was always at each other's throats and it's never shown that they liked each other beyond an ability to work together in a crisis.

And Karl Urban does the best job of the reboot cast of recapturing the original spirit of his character but I agree with you that he just doesn't smile enough. His crankiness should hide that old Southern charm but Urban so rarely gets to show it.

Completely AGREED here.
