It depresses me too. Which is why I was SOOOO happy when I saw *SPOILERS* Hiccup's mom in How to Train Your Dragon 2. His dad was still a central focus -- but I love how they showed so much of his character was derived from his mother.

I love father-son relationships, but they're a dime a dozen in media. Just like male friendships. Try to find mother-daughter relationships or female friendships and they're a lot rarer, unfortunately.

I really strongly disagree. Freeman's version of Watson is pretty much the only thing I unreservedly like about Sherlock and he's probably my favorite screen Watson. I think he has all the traits that you list in the top category, in a nuanced way. He's adjusted for the modern era, yes, but you can still see the positive traits and the original canon Watson underneath. Yes, the fussiness and the fatigue is there but it's combined with loyalty and bravery and strength and energy. It feels more compelling, interesting, and realistic to me than any other screen Watson I've seen. And I think Freeman's performance is really strong.

I definitely like it more than the RDJ films where everything seems pretty over the top, including Watson's character. Of course that's just a matter of taste, really, but still - Freeman's Watson is by far the closest to how I imagine the character in the books.

If you say so....I thought they looked hilariously bad. Except magneto. I guess being in prison made him not really embrace the 70s fashion. He was pretty stylish in the first movie too.
