(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)-- SIX FEET UNDER. Ruth Fisher is one of the most complex and layered mothers (and older women in general) that I've seen on TV. The entire show is about the family and its dynamics, so her relationship with all of her children is very central.
-- GILMORE GIRLS (Multi-generational, even! Lorelai and Rory may have been the main characters, but Lorelai and Emily's relationship was also hugely important)
-- ONCE UPON A TIME. All sorts of different mother/child pairings are key. Snow and Emma. Emma/Regina and Henry. Regina and Cora. The list goes on.
-- Alias(Sydney's relationship with her dad was also very important. But Irina Derevko is one of the best semi-villainous TV moms ever)
-- Grey's Anatomy. It's touched on less these days (though I'm guessing it will come up again with the latest twist), but in the early seasons Meredith's relationship with her mom was pretty central to her character and development.
-- For comedy, as others have said, Archer. Also, Arrested Development.
