As much as I actually identify with younger people, I do think its a pity we have less older characters that are great in out youth-obsessed culture (and even really old ones, I'm going to mention Walter Bishop again).

+1 Most of the heroes of SF stories in the '70s and '80s were in their 30s AT LEAST. I think the only exception was Case, from Neuromancer, and even then, I don't recall him being a teenager. He was old enough to drink in Japan!!

I haven't seen a lot of Fringe, but I like the mix of "old stoner," "going senile," and "weird genius" they came up with for Walter, and the way Peter related to him felt very much like reality.

The thing was he could so easily have been a caricature, but he's really a person you feel for, and vital for a lot of plot lines.

It's one of the things that annoyed me with the first Superman reboot. It was supposed to take place 5 after the original one or most probably from an alternate version of the first one with Christopher Reeve... But Lois Lane looks 20 yrs old, has a 5 yo son, and a Pulitzer price.

It was much easier to believe that Lois was a renowned journalist when she was played by 30 years old Margot Kidder.
