I know this is mostly EU on Han, however, Han was already in a military organization before, just for the Empire. He was TIE Pilot Ace and was a Lieutenant before he was kicked out (for saving Chewie). Which meant, he'd passed the tests and gone through officer's academy. That's where he earned the Corellian Bloodstripe on his pants. (The yellow tuxedo stripe) And that's the only honor they couldn't take away from him when they ejected him from the Empire's Starfleet. I think he had a few other awards as well. Everything after that in his back story I KNOW is complete Expanded Universe. So him becoming a General was just something that was coming one way or the other.
