Look OP I feel you; I hate BBC Sherlock with the passion of a thousand burning suns. But I don't think your assessment of the character is correct? He's a bit less independent and forthright than canonical Watson, yes, but I really don't see "the spluttering fussy middle-aged fuddy-duddy" you do.

That said. I gave up after S2. So perhaps the character has, in fact, descended to the hellishly OOC depths you describe in your secret. Which. Eh. It sucks, but I still won't be watching it, sooooo...I don't think that's how the character started out, that's all I'm saying.

Also tbpf, both canon Watson and Holmes were much older than their BBC counterparts. So. There's that too.

No comment on the RDJ movies because, although I love steampunk, and especially steampunk with explosions, adding a thin veneer of ACD to it is not really my thing.

Lies! Lies and slander! In "A Study in Scarlet," Holmes and Watson were both in their late 20s.
