Yep. Nice summary.

Slight problem in that pretty much nothing in BBC Sherlock is much like it is in the books.

I don't really disagree with that honestly. Can't really think of anything else in the series that I think they pull of as well as Watson. It's not like I'm a huge fan of the series as a whole, I just think they somehow managed to get Watson down well.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL what? I've read the books and I strongly disagree with you. They've updated it brilliantly while using canon, imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that Holmes isn't a socially clueless asshat who's rude all the time. Except that Holmes knows how to be nice to people AND realizes it's in his best interest to do so in order to solve a case. Except that Watson doesn't have to spend his time nursing Holmes along because they're not in a co-dependent relationship where he constantly makes excuses for Holmes' poor behavior. Except that Irene Adler isn't sexually or romantically obsessed with Holmes at all, nor does she require him to rescue her.

Brilliantly updated? Nah. You may enjoy BBC Sherlock. I do. But it's not really an "update" of the books as it is a total rewrite.

DA

All of this. I watched the first two series of Sherlock and then read about 20 of the short stories from all over the place, and I just couldn't reconcile the Holmes in Sherlock with the original. Holmes is actually fairly decent to the people he helps and from what I can recall he's never openly disdainful and doesn't outright insult them or their intelligence like in Sherlock.

Don't even get me started on Irene Adler and the atrociousness of her treatment in Sherlock, not to mention how far from the original stories they've brought her.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost every adaption reduces Adler to a sappy love-interest.

DA

That's true, but they really went above and beyond by making her a dominatrix so they'd have the excuse of having her parade around naked for male titillation. And, of course, ignoring the fact that Irene is one of the few people to beat Sherlock, yet having her lose to him in a pretty pathetic way (I will never not roll my eyes at SHER-locked).

Another DA chiming in. SCAN was where I lost the plot, b/c that's where the show lost the plot. Quite literally.

Pro tip: The ending of "A Scandal in Bohemia" does NOT end with Holmes
.
*anon froths for a bit in incoherent rage*

Ahem. Sorry about that. So, yeah, didn't appreciate what the writers and showrunners decided to do with SCAN.

AYRT

You know, I hated that episode so much I've tried to actively block it from my memory, so I forgot about the very end of it. And now that I remember, my fury has been reinvigorated because that was completely enraging bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was incredibly shitty. The whole episode was. But just the LI part is nothing new.

naked for male titillation

Excuse you, I am female and was titillated.

+corollary Except Holmes isn't a socially clueless asshat, making Watson cluck his tongue and act schoolmarmish because he's got to police Holmes' behavior. They're codependent in a way I find very OOC from the stories.

I do enjoy the show. I just don't think they're very Holmes and Watson.

Canon Holmes tickles and giggles at and plays with a baby.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Can't remember which story. One of the later ones.

Sussex Vampire is the story you're after!

"while using crapping all over canon"

FTFY

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree. I feel like the majority of the changes people whine about are necesseties due to the modern setting, I think they've done a great job of incorporating the elements of the original stories into this modern adaption.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
you haven't...actually read the stories..have you..

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
All of them actually....why are people so fucking resistant to the idea that people can appreciate bbc sherlock as an adaption? I love all things Holmes, including bbc. I'm not saying it isn't flawed or is a perfect adaption but I stand by my original statement. Fuck I'm so sick of people saying that I can't be a fan of both. I was a fan of ACD and other Holmes adaptions before bbc sherlock came along.

It's kind of difficult to find any adaptation that's "like it is in the books" because the books vsried based on when they were written, what the plot of the day was, and how irritated ACD was feeling when he wrote them. The man did not give a shit about continuity, and as the years went on, he found new and exciting ways to give even less of a shit than he had before.

That said, I agree with the anon above me saying that BBC!Sherlock is way too much of an asshole to be the Holmes I recognize. Same with Watson, actually. They're a fairly self-centered pair.
