It's kind of difficult to find any adaptation that's "like it is in the books" because the books vsried based on when they were written, what the plot of the day was, and how irritated ACD was feeling when he wrote them. The man did not give a shit about continuity, and as the years went on, he found new and exciting ways to give even less of a shit than he had before.

That said, I agree with the anon above me saying that BBC!Sherlock is way too much of an asshole to be the Holmes I recognize. Same with Watson, actually. They're a fairly self-centered pair.
