I despised the main character and I found it overall incredibly boring. I mean, Flaubert set out to write a book about the most boring subject he could think of and it really shows. I read the novel under the best possible conditions, with an excellent French lit teacher whom I got along with really well and who was about the only person in the world who might have stood a chance at making me like the book, and I still hated every single page of it. Not even Flaubert's beautiful style could make up for how dull it is and how awful Emma Bovary is.
