Run-on first sentence warning

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason that fiction which revolves around kids' adventure stories has a lot of absent moms is because there's a perception that kids are not going to get their nifty solo adventures if mom is around. I mean, the usual tropes -"sneaking out of the house," "going away to a parallel universe" - they're a lot harder to do if a Good Mom is around, mom-ing. So classic stories took away the mom so the kids could get their solo adventures. I wish that hadn't become such a tradition, it bugs me.

It's a hybrid of that and instant sympathy, because a kid who's soldiering on despite having a dead mother is so brave and think of what he's had to endure already, before the adventure even starts.

And if the mothers are around when the kid goes heroeing, then thz the entire Internet immediately accuses them of being horrible, abusive and neglectful. It's just easier all around to make adventuring kids orphans.

That's not a run-on sentence, it's just a long one!
