The reason this happens is because the film industry is run by men so they inherently find the father/son dynamic more interesting. Brave was taken away from it's female director because the men running Pixar were not interested in the Mother/Daughter story and wanted to add more action into the story.

Mother stories are often a huge stereotype as well, we really need more women writers and directors running things.
