If you say so....I thought they looked hilariously bad. Except magneto. I guess being in prison made him not really embrace the 70s fashion. He was pretty stylish in the first movie too.

70s fashion tended to be slimmer and less baggy without being skin-tight (like modern skinny jeans) and that's a look that flatters just about everyone.

+1

The 70s did a lot of weird things with fashion, but I will never complain about them making jeans that actually fits a dude's ass. That bullshit baggy air pouch ass style that's popular right now is the worst thing ever.

Charles' shirts looked awful, but I really like the trousers of the era. They just looked flattering on anyone while today's skinny jeans fashion makes everyone who is not incredibly skinny look incredibly fat.

Erik, as always, looked great.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And the hair! During the whole movie, I was thinking "I really hope he gets a haircut for the next movie".

And I agree about Erik except for the whole Magneto regalia. Although I admit that it was way worse in First Class where he managed to look even more ridiculous than in the comics.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed on the skinny jeans oh my word. That style cannot go away fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well to be fair it's movie 70's, not actual 70's, so there's probably a pretty heavy bias towards clothing from the decade that could still be considered attractive by modern fashion standards.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's an important difference.

Yeah, pretty much this. You want real '70s clothes, you should look at movies that were actually made in the '70s. Some of that stuff was...uh...eye-popping to say the least.

"Cooler." Okay. If you say so. I thought fast dude looked kinda cool in a spacey way. But I like goggles.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-08-09 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not for me. Except for Erik, who seems not to give two shits about trends, and takes out all his horrible fashion sense on his fighting outfits.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No to the power of NO.

One of the interesting things I've noticed is that, since the last few years have given us a lot of historical/nostalgia movies set in the 1970s, different costume designers have found different solutions for the problem that 1970s aesthetics are objectively horrible. The most common solution is what DoFP did, which is to give a little bit of a nod to 1970s styles via decent things like turtlenecks and trim cuts, so that youngsters can think "Oh, okay, 70s stuff."

What they're leaving out are the actual nightmares of 70s aesthetics: the jumpsuits, the endless paisley, the plaids, and most of all, the utterly horrible color palette that that whole blind decade was drenched in.

When you're looking at the cute, cleaned-up version of 70s clothing in movies like this, you notice how everything everyone's wearing is either shit brown, avocado green, or safety orange? No? THEN IT'S NOT THE FUCKING 70S AND WE'RE ALL GRATEFUL FOR THAT.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OI!!!

I happen to like the polyester--everything, paisley (i just loved that pattern when I was younger), jumpsuits are the business, and the vomit rainbow that existed was fabulous.

On another note, overalls should be required in everyone's wardrobe, not just farmers and country side workers.

I am seriously not being sarcastic. I just genuinely enjoy all that mess.

And all the polyester that gives you yeast infections! Never stand next to someone dressed in polyester on a hot day, they reek.

My house was decorated in the 70s and thus I have avocado green wallpaper, safety orange kitchen benches and shit brown as a major feature in the carpet. (Actually, the carpet is okay, it doesn't show stains. But the kitchen hurts my eyes.)

I was a teenager in the 80s, and thought 70s fashions were the WORST!

...Do I ever feel stupid nowadays.

The thing is, this is a 2000's-era movie using sorta 70's fashions. Watch some movies (or look at old magazines or somnething) actually from the '70's and you'll see that this isn't really the case. 70's fashion was AWFUL; some of the outfits will have have you wanting to tear your eyes out...

Dear Anon:

Please do go check out The Brady Bunch or The Partridge Family, then come back and tell us if your secret still stands.

Granted, I love those styles. But I'm kind of in the minority.

I like the cut of some 70s clothes but generally not the colors, patterns, fabrics, or textures... so, you know, not the actual clothes, I guess. As someone said above, the fitted-but-not-tight look is flattering, flared-leg pants balance out the thigh, and fitted T-shirts are so much better than the giant-ass tents everyone wore when I was a kid.

Fun link: here's some images from a Sears catalog from 1973

It helps that wossname, Charles, is cute.

But yeah, the 1970's had some neat stuff.

I really missed the 1970's when I was in school in the 1980's. It was what was normal and stylish when I was a little kid, and then popular culture turned against it hard. I eventually had my 70's love beat out of me.

Later, I would miss the 1980's. Painter pants? California rolls? That whole sort of convergence of Nagel and Lisa Frank? That was pretty cool, too.

Today, I'm old enough to have some more perspective. I'm glad to see elements of those styles come back when they do, whether as part of hipsterism, foreign fashion (where they may just still be around) or minority subculture.

I agree, but not because of this movie

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
The clothes Starsky and Hutch wore were pretty attractive too (mostly), although they have the benefit of wearing more subtle colors, because cops. /additional S&H grandma

I don't know, there's some 70s stuff that works and some that doesn't.

Three piece suits and turtlenecks can work very well -http://www.imdb.com/media/rm105687808/tt0072519?ref_=ttmi_mi_all_sf_3

Some suits have flair, some are just weird, jeans and flannel is fine, and I kind of like the shirt over the turtleneck -

Most of these are fine (I don’t even mind the white pants, much) -

To be fair though, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender look too damn hot no matter what they wear.
