I can understand that, OP. I personally tend to like a good mix of things: I love the smaller stakes of Looper but my favourite television show of all time is Battlestar Galactica (the re-imagining) which has the stakes about as high as they can get, at least as far as humanity is involved. Though such crazy high stakes do need to be grounded in interpersonal interaction/conflict to really work, IMO.
