Legacy

What kills me about the new films, too, is how they made Kirk another "chosen hero." His dad saved hundreds of people so now he has a "legacy" to live up to. Rather than being just another talented but generic hard-working person who moved up the ranks the way and built his own legend -- the way he is in TOS.

This is one area where I feel like Abrams stole from Star Wars to Trek's detriment. Star Wars is mythological and those elements just don't work in Trek, which is supposed to be a positive vision of the future told by ordinary, self-made people.

Even Star Wars (including the prequel trilogy) did better than Abram's Trek. The prequels harshly deconstructed the chosen one, with Darth Vader being the direct result of Qui Gon's mucking about to get Anakin into training and rushing Obi Wan's to do it. The Original Trilogy gave Luke a medal in the 1st film, and some minor command in Empire. However he had to earn his Jedi and rebel stats with extra training from Yoda and missions to rescue Han from Jabba. Luke came up the hard way. So did Han, going from scamming smuggler to guy with actual respect and ability to temper his impetuosity. All of that was better handling of teen hero and chosen one tropes of Abrams Trek. Makes you kinda worried about the new movies really.

I know this is mostly EU on Han, however, Han was already in a military organization before, just for the Empire. He was TIE Pilot Ace and was a Lieutenant before he was kicked out (for saving Chewie). Which meant, he'd passed the tests and gone through officer's academy. That's where he earned the Corellian Bloodstripe on his pants. (The yellow tuxedo stripe) And that's the only honor they couldn't take away from him when they ejected him from the Empire's Starfleet. I think he had a few other awards as well. Everything after that in his back story I KNOW is complete Expanded Universe. So him becoming a General was just something that was coming one way or the other.
