How is your observation racist?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Noticing a cultural trend =/= racist.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I.... don't think that's racist? It's just some things you've noticed are popular. It's not like you're saying power imbalances appeal to the Chinese because of how inscrutable and exotic they are or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate how everything is considered "racist" nowadays, so much that you feel guilty for simply making observations. Bloody political over-correctness

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You know there are people that actually debate whether or not it is racist for

A) A victim to describe the race of the perpetrator
B) Racist for police to use race as an identifier when looking for a criminal (example: Be on the lookout for a white or hispanic male in mid 20s wearing a blue hoodie and jeans).

wat

seriously

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Male? OMG this shouldn't be used as an identifier - it's misandry!!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THEY IDENTIFY AS MALE? THEY COULD BE NON-BINARY!

But literally no one is calling this observation racist.

Like, there are huuuuge sections of fandom that seem to like pairings with power imbalances.

Chinese person here with a quasi-explanation (TLDR)

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-08-09 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm speaking toward personal observation, not all Chinese people and their relationships, yada yada yada.

The one-child policy, as easy as it is to get around (for some families) left a huge disparity in the numbers of men and women. As a result, women not only hold equal power in Chinese society with men, but greater power in relationships, because if you're a Chinese man and you do anything she doesn't like, there are probably at least two or three guys waiting to take your place. My cousin's last girlfriend broke up with him because he took a pay cut (not that I blame her, since there's also a huge amount of pressure on her as the sole financial support of her family) when his company downsized. Add to that the expectation that you'll marry a Chinese person (ooh boy did I piss my mother off when I married an Irishman) and pretty much your only option is to be in a relationship with a high power imbalance.

That being said, however, why is the picture of Harry and Voldemort? Is there a huge power discrepancy there, really? I mean, sure, Voldemort's far more experienced, but Harry's the one who defeats him at the end with a pretty basic spell.

Thanks for the insight! Now I'm wondering what the power imbalance fics written by Chinese fans look like.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because it's not just Chinese fic writers that do this. See: Twilight and Fifty Shades of Gray.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
But what do the bunny ears means?

I NEED TO KNOW. O_o

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about that fic on ff.net. It's called Black Bunny or something like that. IT has humor and romance listed as a genre and it's quite popular. It has Voldemort in a bunny shape. BUNNY ears are also a wink to the nekko trope and its a super cute innocent character with ears and a tail.

Note aside, I'm happy no one thought it was racist

(Anonymous) 2014-08-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, now this secret has me thinking about other trends in fic translations for specific countries/cultures. Damn you, fascinating secret!
