While no, they're not all that type to a T, the fact remains that pretty much every love interest in every JRPG has a set of very similar traits that link back to that. Superficially speaking, isn't it telling that almost every single one is a healer? Sure, healer does not mean you're weak, blah blah blah, but when you get the same thing again and again you have to wonder about the pattern.

You want good females? Valkyrie Profile, Xenosaga, FFVI, Chrono Trigger/Cross. Three of those series have female protagonists. Pattern, anyone?

But can't the same thing be said of male protagonists? Most of the time when they aren't being outgoing idiots, they're being androgynous angst machines.

Two cliches is still more variety than one.

I feel like I've said this at least six times by now, but protagonists, by nature of being protagonists, get more fleshed out with a backstory and all that. The love interest NEVER gets a history, and her personality is largely defined by her interaction with the male lead.

Garnet, Aeris, and Yuna didn't have histories? I guess I imagined all those in-game flashback sequences. As did everyone who wrote a walkthrough for those respective games.

Don't forget Tifa! She's totally flat and lifeless (no pun intended, seriously) and didn't live through Nibelheim and trying to deal with Cloud going absolutely bugfuck nuts!

Oh, and Yuffie! She has, like, no personality whatsoever and just appeared out of thin air! No parents, no hometown, no goals, she's just there to make Cloud look good because he's discovered Dramamine!

Exactly what the other person said. The fact that you support male characters so prominently (as is evidenced by your slashing) indicates to ME that you're most likely a hell of a lot more critical of women than men.

And frankly, I don't think the majority of those characters even have ROOTS in this stereotype. Even if they did, their various rebellions from it really don't qualify them for that kind of scrutiny. What defines that particular character archetype is a complete obeyal of the rules (and literally everything else, for that matter) and they DON'T FIT IT.

And what the fuck is wrong with a healer character?

Sorry.

I agree. Healer != YN.

I also don't think that Yuna is a YN. Yeah, she is humble, soft-spoken and doesn't have a lot of physical strength, but she certainly doesn't obey everything. Heck, she overthrows the very church she was a representative of as a summoner. I'd say that's something that takes a lot of strength (even if it isn't physical strength) to do.

Those characters aren't all healers. Collette isn't even a mage; she gets three angel spells (and one of them does heal, but every character other than Lloyd and Presea get at least one healing ability and most of them get more than the one she gets) but otherwise she's a physical attacker/thief. Rinoa's only a healer if you make her one, her limits are primarily physical attacks, and she's physically stronger than every other character in the game if you look at her base stats. Kairi's not a healer, the only time we ever see her fight she's smacking away with her keyblade just like the boys do (admittedly badly, but it's her first time so I'll give her some slack). Yuna, of course, becomes a fighter in the second game of the series, although she is the healer in the first one.

I dunno, it's a matter of interpretation. I liked Rosa, she was useful and strong in her own magic-using fashion. I hated Celes: she came across as the Mary Sue insert of a girl who wanted to rip off Terra ("Look! Locke found another beautiful magic using tool of the empire! Except she's a GENERAL. And she's got an awesome sword, just like Terra! And, uh, she sings opera!") Raine, the actual healer of Symphonia, was appealing in her own snarky way, being that she was like the mentor figure. And Shion was only saved from the damsel in distress role by her plot armor and the fact that the plot of Xenosaga didn't involve knights in shining armor. (KOS-MOS was delightful, Shion far less so.)

To be fair, your point (assuming you made the secret) does have some truth to it. Shana? Good lord, she was hideously awful. But at the same time...archetypes have good characters and bad characters.

I dunno. If your kink is homosexuality, good on you, I just question blaming it on universally 'bad' writing.
