24. I remember back when The Little Mermaid craze first started. I was in 5th grade at the time, and had read the original fairytale from the library, multiple times, before I ever saw the film. I remember being so pissed off at how much of the story got changed that I ended up doing one of my book reports on the Andersen version.

When I had to present it? The class was horrified. I remember one girl even tried to convince me that Andersen was just jealous of how much everyone liked the movie.

BWAHAHAHAHA to that one girl.

I was much, much younger than you when the movie came out, but right after I saw it my mom bought me this anime version of it that was more like the original story. I think I only watched it a few times and then put it away because I thought it was too sad.

I remember that version. Rented it every time I was taken to the video store, and I finally tracked it down on DVD. Really, The Little Mermaid has always been my favorite fairytale because it's so unique in its genre. The princess did not get her man, nor did she live happily ever after.

But isn't that par for the course as far as Hans Christian Andersen goes. At his best, the man's stories are sad as fuck, but you're always lead to believe there's something redeeming about the tragedy even if it's tearing your guts out.

Personally, though, I'd much rather there be a Disney-obsessed generation than an Andersen-obsessed one. The therapy bills would be sky-high.

Too true. That's part of the reason I liked his stories so much, though. Even the Grimm tales still had the heroine getting what she wants and living happily the rest of her days. By the time I was six, I knew the world didn't work like that, and Andersen's tales made me feel validated in a way; sometimes, life really does suck, and it's up to you to find a bright side to it.

Again, I'm sorry that I made this too general because a lot of people are misunderstanding.

I was...2 when Little Mermaid came out. Was entranced. Now that I'm older I hate it, but the effect's still there.

...But lawl at that girl.

I never understood the ending of the Andersen version. She had to wash her feet in his blood to stay human, but she refused to kill him, so she wound up becoming seafoam. But the story never said that she *had* to kill him. Couldn't she have just cut his arm and washed her feet in *that*?
