That was never my intent. I still think it's important to understand why you like something rather than just liking it... but again, I'm in the minority. I should probably just keep my mouth shut.

And you had to broadcast this on fs? And I think you should also realize that not finding an archetypical character interesting doesn't automatically make them offensive/boring characters.

1) Again, I just said I should probably keep my mouth shut. Next time I have an unpopular opinion I'll keep it to myself.

2) http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/105739.html?thread=24124939#t24319243

I'm making an attempt to sound like less of a wanker about it, okay?

Re: OP of 37

I don't know most of those characters.... Just Rinoa and Yuna and they're not alike at all. Squall/Rinoa and Tidus/Yuna are different.

That's the problem. In these games there are romances that are alike in the barest of senses. And you don't like them for your issues. That's fine.

You're wording sucked.

I also found that because you can't relate to these girls is the reason you write slash damn offensive.

Look, I know I said some lame and wanky things. I'm trying to fix that.

I'm trying to think this through, I'm trying to word things carefully, and I'm trying to be as honest and clear as I possibly can.

I thought I gave a fairly clear reason for why I put all those women in the image: I can't relate to them. What the hell is wrong with writing about characters that I can relate to? I don't get it at all!

What do you even want me to say? Tell me what I could say that wouldn't offend you and I'll say it, because right now I am flat out of ideas.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well these women are very different. You put them together and mushed them under an offensive label and you're shocked at the wank? It's fine not to relate to them, it's not fine to put them under untrue generalizations and justify some of your sexist words.

I'd let it go if I were you. Think all you want about your tastes and talk to them with your friends, not people at place you already have started on the wrong foot on.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, let's say goodbye to the 'offensive label' then. I've already admitted that I was wrong on that.

I don't believe it's sexist to say that I believe these characters are similar, which is what I was trying to get at with my final post. I don't know HOW they're similar because every time I try to come up with something twenty people come down and rip it apart, but I just know that there is a common thread between them that makes me dislike them. Can I at least have that?

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
And what makes you think I've read all your comments?

Your secret was sexist in wording. That's what I got from you. And I also don't get why you think most of these women are alike unless women looking pretty and being healers are alike enough for you and yes, I do think that's sexist.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Fine, you haven't, it's had to keep track. I just feel like I've repeated myself again and again because I've had to reply to so many people.

Nix the Yamato Nadeshiko thing. It is gone. It is over. It was wrong. It should never have been there in the first place. There was a post a while back that I don't want to try and track down again that explained quite well why I mistakenly included it in the first place, but that's no longer relevant.

I don't see how it's sexist not to like certain characters! Whether or not you agree with my statement that they're similar - and regardless of what anyone argues on this, I still believe that they are, and I was trying to define the pattern that made me think that. I don't hate them, I'm not trying to bash them, I just don't like them and I *DO* think that fact that none of the canon love interests appeal to me has SOME bearing on whether or not I write slash.

Are there certain male characters that I group together in 'types' and dislike? ABSOLUTELY! I don't like Tidus/Vaan/Sora any more than I like Aeris/Rinoa/Yuna! The difference with the 'hero' characters is that we get the other cliche, the angstpot a la Cecil/Cloud/Squall - which I *DO* like. There's a fairly solid divide between these 'types' (which yes, apparently are all in my head, but humor me) when it comes to male protagonists, but the love interests are not so clear-cut in their differences.

The fact that I don't like bunch of characters that I think are similar has nothing do to with gender at all. I'm sorry if it came off that way, but I've already established that the communication of my message was total shit. I fail at making secrets.

I'm sick of being called 'sexist' here and on F_W (oh yay, a f_w mention. I feel sort of bad for laughing at something that is mocking me), especially after I went off at length about twenty different female characters that I DO like and love interests that I find break this apparently-non-existent-cliche.

Although you're right, I should probably drop it and every time I say something new I just make it worse... I just can't stand that people are calling me sexist. That pisses me off more than anything else that's been said about the whole damn thing.

*hard to keep track.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're trying to be sexist, but that you're putting all these girls who aren't really alike at and saying they are... yeah that's kinda sexist to me.

Though I don't agree that all these girls (i.e. Yuna since I don't know the others well enough to debate) are there JUST to be the main characters' love interest, I do get being frustrated with the only main girl in stories only there to be a love interest. And I think that's what you might be trying to get across, but did so in a poor manner.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
They are all

1) Traditionally feminine
2) Kind and soft-hearted
3) Strong-willed but physically weak
4) White mages/possessors of 'unique-in-the-world power X' (such as summoning magic, or being the Sorceress or whatever), wielding a staff or occasionally a low-damaging projectile weapon
5) Who are either princesses/that world's equivalent of a princess/inheritors of some powerful magic or the main character's best friend from childhood
6) And the protagonist's love interest.

Re: OP of 37

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
And I could list the same things about the main characters. I am going to stop now at 1) Traditionally feminine because I disagree and I'm really too sleepy and frustrated to keep up. Good luck.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Sorry.
