Lol well, surely the dragons were based on cats in the movies, though? I remember in the first movie, when Hiccup is sitting by all the baby dragons, they all act exactly like kitties...

One of the people working on Toothless' movements used his own cat as a model- for example: He stuck some tape on her tail and watched her try and get it off.

Various animals. the big blue one is very bird like, the new one, Cloudjumper (i think?) is very owl like. The big guy in teh group with the dragon with little wings? He's very dog like, etc etc.

I read somewhere that Toothless was based on a lot of different animals, so it wouldn't just be "hey look at this big animal acting like a dog, isn't it cute?"

Like, he/she (I'm digging Toothless as a girl now) was influenced by pumas, house cats, dogs, horses, hawks (and various other birds of prey) as well as some snakes.

And the Village Elder becomes a Crazy Cat Dragon Lady.

I loved the parts in the second movie with Gothi and her pack (swarm?) of Terrible Terrors.
