Me, too, OP! For one enormous reason: my cat is Toothless. Black with big saucer eyes the same color, exact same mannerisms, etc, to the point where my family calls that movie "(cat's name)'s move". And... my cat is a girl. Therefore Toothless is a girl. I don't care what Hiccup says, Toothless is a girl. :P

Which is understandable because the idea doesn't get any less silly after you've seen the movie. But he is a stellar character.

Unless you're harassing the BNF about it, I don't think you're petty, OP. Everyone, I imagine, wants more fic of their favorite pairings, so of course you're going to be a bit annoyed that a previous source of good works has now shifted away. Your feelings are understandable and having a preference isn't an issue.

If you were pestering the BNF, I think that would be a different story, though, because that would be rather entitled behavior.

Well, neither of those characters have canon names, so you're in luck!

(They do have names they were given in various non-game spinoffs, which the English language fandom sometimes treat as canon, but they aren't and have never been. In all Japanese language official material, they are simply "protagonist".)

What qualifies as enforcing? That is to say, is it possible for them to write a character as trans in such a way that you don't call it "enforcing" their being trans?

To be fair, it's not like the popular concept of fandom is that far off the mark in a lot of cases. Normal, well-adjusted fans do exist but there are just as many hopelessly socially awkward nerds out there in fandom.
