You sound like everyone who doubted this movie in 2012.

Which is understandable because the idea doesn't get any less silly after you've seen the movie. But he is a stellar character.

I understand why you'd be apprehensive. I don't tend to like "mascot" characters, they're hard to take seriously and rarely have a character beyond being a mascot. But I really liked this raccoon - he was animated well, and he did have a character, and didn't exist purely for comic relief. No spoilers, but the last scenes involving him pretty much made me love him, and love the movie more for him.

The talking raccoon was the worst part of the movie, imo. Stilted lines delivered poorly. I would have liked it a whole lot more without him.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but as a Keith Giffen (co)-creation he absolutely fits the tone of the movie.

If it helps, he's probably one of the best things in it. I'm surprised how much he didn't sound like Bradley Cooper at all and you know what, I sort of forgot the character was a talking racoons because there's so many other multi-coloured weird shaped characters in it that you get used to it!

But the talking raccoon is sort of the best part? Well, all the characters are pretty awesome, but him especially.

But he's a talking raccoon with a gun, it's supposed to be ridiculous. That's what's so great about Rocket; he's unusual and out there, but he's still a great character! He's wonderfully animated too, Cooper's line delivery is perfect, and he has a few of the most touching moments in the entire film. You aren't obligated to see Guardians, but you might like it (and him) if you do! (If you don't, no biggie?)

I ♥ Rocket though, and the silliness of Guardians on a whole. I can do grim and depressing and serious, but sometimes that isn't what I want. This movie is a great feel good film.

Well...it's not really a serious movie, OP. It's silly and fun (although, ironically, it holds the coveted title of Shortest Amount of Time a Movie has Taken to Make Potato Cry).

You definitely won't be able to take him seriously. Not because he's a talking raccoon, but because he's a really incredibly derivative talking raccoon.

You're not supposed to take it seriously. The reason why Guardians outshines the rest of the MCU is that it understands it is ridiculous and plays it up. The rest of the directors are still figuring that out.

And the CGI characters are less cartoonish than the rest of the cast.

These responses makes me wayyyy less hesitant to see it. Idk, my hesitance also stems from how much hype it's been getting on tumblr (at least, on the parts of tumblr I'm on), so... but I had the same feeling about Pacific Rim until I actually saw it and loved it. There's about a 90% chance that I'll have the same reaction to this movie. Hearing that I'm not supposed to take him seriously (at least, all the time) helps too.

Tbh I wasn't sure how well Rocket and Groot were going to come off in movie-form, what with them being fairly on the silly-side as far as characters go, but it worked really well for me. I loved them both, and Rocket especially was my favourite thing about the film.

I can't get past the talking Raccoon or the talking Tree. It's not silly or stupid, it's called a gut feeling.
