It was both for me. She wasn't well adjusted and the turning fanfic in for homework part was so cringe-worthy, it was unbelievable. I agree she had way too easy of a time in school. She was a loner jerk and actively didn't want to make friends too, but she did.

I did meet two different people in college who turned in fic for their homework in a creative writing class (one thinly disguised, the other not at all). I haven't read this book, though, so I don't know how unbelievable it really is.

In the book, the fandom she was in in is obviously based on Harry Potter (though Harry Potter is also mentioned in the book, another point that was like ??)you know, an obvious pop culture thing. So it was pretty unbelievable.
