I've thought about this and I think the reason I don't like always-a-girl/boy or head-canon trans* fic is because I relate too much to the characters and it feels like someone is, basically, giving me a gender change I don't want (even when it's not my gender!) I realize that makes no rational sense, and I probably relate to them too much, but it feels discordant. My real life friends who are transgender obviously don't inspire those feelings: one of them transitioned after I knew him, and the biggest issue I faced wasn't pronouns but reminding myself repeatedly to call him by his new legal name. Names are such a tough habit to change.
