I've seen "always a girl" attached to fic with genderbent characters to indicate that it's AU, rather than "woke up with missing and extra bits—it was magic!" fic.

NA
Yeaaaah? I didn't think anon was saying otherwise...

I'm not being contrary since airt didn't give context aside from fandom?

eta: tbf, what I am wondering is if folk in TW fandom are using it for things like "always a girl Lydia", "always a boy Stiles", or other reduntant variations.

ALWAYS A GIRL!STILES

I see it too much in the context of a writer who doesn't like slash but wants to write Sterek, so she writes a girl Stiles and names her some stupid Stiles-like girl name.

Like, holy shit, at that point, just write your own original fiction. But I can't stand AUs. They don't work in a fucking coffee shop. They aren't cops. Stick to the damned story.

Ahaha I've seen that in so many fandoms, especially the anime ones. An author can't stand slash at all, but they can see the dynamic of a fandom's slash otp if it was het. And then whoever would have been the typical ooc bottom gets such a extra personality upheaval that it screams OC/Canon Character.

Man, I love me every kind of AU, but I also want my favourite characters' basic personality and relationships kept intact. I prefer "what if" over "IMAGINE YOUR OTP ___" if that makes any sense. Coffee shops are some of the worst for that latter imo, especially for live action fandoms since they start to read more like rps than anything.

That's how I've seen it. Back when I was reading Nu!Trek fic for Kirk/Bones, it was ALWAYS tagged as always-a-girl-Kirk/Bones or fem!Kirk/Bones or girl!Kirk/Bones. Something along that line to indicate it was a genderbent fic.

I've seen it used in a worse context D: which .... makes me uncomfortable: a character who in canon passed as a dude, acted as a dude, identified as a dude ... being under cover. Wouldn't be odd if it didn't include every other character suddently treating her differently. Seeeeexiiiiiiiiiiiiism.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Aaaaaaaagh I think I know what you're talking about. The kind where it's like, "OH MAN I THOUGHT YOU WERE A GUY, let me open a door for you so your vagina can take it easy", and the always character is suddenly got the stereotype feelings that come with being a guy or girl straight out of a manga now they're 'out'.

I wanna read some now, because I like reading awful things.

Same anon. YEEEEES! I see how this can be a kink. BUT WHY ALWAYS!?!?!

Why not write a character who is annoyed by different treatment? Or their friends totally not caring?

The best is when a different character is magically attracted them.

As for awfull recs - one anon above wrote about Teen Wolf fandom (never read those, learnt to skip), personally I've seen them in Dragon Age fandom (which is ... odd).

I haven't read much Teen Wolf fic for a while, but I feel like I've read Girl!Stiles fic before, and I'm pretty sure I've read the Sterek kind (although it could also be my imagination filling in gaps and making stuff up) where Derek finds out Stiles was ALWAYS A GIRL and feels like shit for manhandling her because SHE WAS ALWAYS A GIRL, and he coddles her or something. Meanwhile Girl!Stiles discovers nipple play because only suddenly after discovery are they sensitive to everything.

If I start crossing that tag with the show now though, I know I'm just going to end up slogging through infinite Always A Girl!Stiles, and uuuuuuuugh too much stiles gdit. crossing my fingers for Always A Boy!Lydia
I might as well go through DA and other fandoms even if I'm not familiar with them, because at least I'll be familiar enough with the cliches to have an enjoyably bad time ♥

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
SA. Why yes of course it makes so much sense ... not that Derek doesn't kick other women in the butt. Like Erica for instance. Heh, girl!Stiles author forgot about the wee part of canon where Stiles loves porn :D . I bet girl!Stiles would have known her turn ons.

Hm, I recall seeing girl!Stiles appear in ships with Peter as well. Never with Scott. So, standard domination kink?

For some reason, I now want an alwaysboy!Lydia and alwaysgirl!Stiles fic - that would be perfectly crackish :D .
