I suspect a large part of it is because, for a while, everyone wanted to ride the bicycle of Days of Future Past and the alternate timeline where Jean and Scott spawn one or more mutant messiahs that keep bouncing in and out of a massive incoherent swamp of pig farm runnoff that's one of their epic story arcs. Every now and then, the dam bursts and it leaks out, like the time that Captain America died partly because the smartest man on the planet learned political science from Isaac Asimov novels.

And they could have just Dr. Who'd(*) the whole thing, but they didn't, because practically everyone who got the series thought they could make that old thing do new tricks with a retcon, when no, it was just another round of post-apocalyptic messianic suck, which should have been left in a pocket dimension like Bellasco. And even if you were reading a series where Ex-X-Men were off doing their own thing, it would be interrupted with MUTANT APOCALYPSE MESSIAH DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA HERE'S THE ASSHOLE YOU WERE READING THIS TITLE TO AVOID.

(*) Let's not mention how often they broke the rules to cram Rose Tyler into an episode. Crossing the universes is a bad thing, except when it isn't, except when it is, except when it isn't, except when it is.

"Jean and Scott spawn one or more mutant messiahs that keep bouncing in and out of a massive incoherent swamp of pig farm runnoff that's one of their epic story arcs"

This statement is such perfectly worded truth.
