Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

I experienced a resurgence of interest in KNB due to a secret on here that criticized the protagonist's behavior, which got me curious because I hadn't noticed any of it before. So I went back to the manga and caught up on all the new chapters and... I still don't really see OP's point. Like, many of the instances they talked about were played for laughs, and I'm really forgiving of callous comedic behavior (in anime/manga). Kind of reminds me of fans who call out characters for being 'abusive' when they engage in slapstick violence.

But that aside, it did get me back in the fandom and I'm reading fic again and it's all good. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of sports manga but I may have a weak spot for basketball manga (despite... not liking... the sport???). Loved Slam Dunk, but my obsession of many years was actually a little known series called I'll. Short, beautifully-drawn, and very character-driven. It used to be a nightmare trying to find scans but apparently it's all online now: http://www.mangahere.co/manga/i_ll_generation_basket. How the times change.

Was the complaint regarding Kuroko being violent? The only violence I've seen him engage in so far was punching Kagami when Kagami decided he could win a game all on his own. (Which I admit wasn't great, but it isn't something I could hate the main character for.) I can't imagine him being violent regularly...that doesn't seem like his style. But I guess I'm not far in the anime too, so that could change. As for callous behavior...I guess I'll have to see when I get there? He can be a bit unfeeling, and I DO wish he had a bit more...spark, but he seems polite enough right now and cares about his teammates a great deal. (Even if he's bad at showing it.)

Another Slam Dunk fan! I should check that out. And thank you for the link to this manga; I'll definitely read it, especially if it's short and character driven.

despite... not liking... the sport???

Haha, I can't remember the last time I sat down and watched sports; it just doesn't happen. On the few occasions I've been to games I've enjoyed them, but it isn't something I want to spend my time on. For some reason putting it in anime form changes everything. How, idk. (Guess the humor and characters?)

No, I don't think this particular criticism was about violence -- I think it might have initially been about shipping, actually, and how Kuroko's treatment of Kagami was unfair and heavily colored by his past with Aomine. Wait here's that secret now, but iirc OP had previously started a thread in GC and elaborated further. This is going into spoilers territory now and you've said you haven't gotten that far into the series, but the gist of it, sans shipping blah-blahs, is that Kuroko does and says callous things from time to time that do not take into account Kagami's feelings. I personally see no evidence in the series that Kagami realizes or even cares, and Kagami is my fave so I'd probably have something to say on the matter if he did, but he... doesn't?

I do find something rather ruthless in the way Kuroko so fervently believes that he's right, but I also don't necessarily think that's a bad thing :\ In general I like the Seirin team dynamics a lot and don't really read anything dark or twisty into it.

Oh man, I like soccer a ridiculous amounts but find soccer manga so boring. Like, around the same time I was reading SD almost everyone else I grew up with was reading Captain Tsubasa, but I just could not get into it. Well hey, I mean, it makes perfect sense for anime sports to be more engaging... after all it's not like IRL athletes are in the habit of jumping 50 feet or shooting lasers out their eyes! :D

Ooo, I'm actually at the episode where Kuroko and Kagami first play against Aomine, but I haven't heard Kuroko tell Kagami that he only needs him to win against Aomine. (Though he obviously does want to win against Aomine and shake him up pretty badly.) That is pretty damn rude and thoughtless of him so I can see why someone wouldn't like it, but you're probably right about Kagami not caring. Right now I actually feel like it would be easier to pair Kuroko with anyone else from his past team than with Kagami. (Though I do like the idea of Kuroko/Kagami, both those characters are shit at discussing their feelings so I feel like I don't know half of what they're thinking and don't have a proper grasp of their relationship. Maybe if I saw them off the court more often.)

Though I will say that after Kuroko told Kagami about his past with Aomine and they did the same fist bump, I went, "Ooo, love triangle" because I'm immature. I can sort of see where the OP is coming from in that regards, but I don't think of it as dark or twisted either.

Kuroko does seem to have strong convictions, yea. Sometimes that can be a good thing and sometimes it isn't. So far I don't see it as a big problem, but I guess that could eventually change.

Poor soccer manga, haha. I feel like the anime versions would be more exciting simply because watching that movement is going to be different than just looking at a still photo on a page, no matter how nice it is. And if real life athletes could jump 50 feet in the air or shoot lasers out of their eyes I would be way more into sports!
