Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball
(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)I also love that it has a mostly solid to great animation quality.
I'm not up-to-date with the manga, but as far as I've seen, it's very close. I like the manga as well (there are some really gorgeous water-colour illustrations in there and the facial expression are hilarious) but I prefer the anime because the movements, speed and the games in general translate better to me in animated form than in static panel form. But that's a matter of preference.
I also think they're doing a great job with the pacing. One thing I always hated about shônen and sports anime is when one single match/fight/whatever takes up 5-10 damn episodes. On Haikyuu!!, a match rarely takes much longer than one episode per set.
(This was something that annoyed me endlessly about Yowamushi Pedal - they kept stretching short distances like 200 meters over 2 episodes by throwing in endless monologues, flashbacks and rousing speeches. It annoyed me so much that I stopped watching.)
And I was exactly the same - I thought "Hey, mabye sports anime aren't as dull as I remember, let's try KnB since it's so popular" - and I honestly couldn't make it through the first episode because I disliked both the characters, the style and the quality so much.
Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball
Isn't the cast adorable? Hinata is the best and Kageyama is a little shit but a strangely endearing little shit, and Nishinoya is just the sweetest little ball of talent you'll ever meet (he stopped a ball with his foot) and Tanaka always, always make me laugh and smile. Asahi is super hot and I love the gentle giant thing he's got going on. They're all so wonderful and cute.
I've been very impressed by the animation! I didn't think it would be anywhere near this smooth, but I have no complaints.
Eek, you've just guaranteed I'll never watch Yowamushi Pedal...that sounds unbearable. I don't mind matches taking a bit (two episodes isn't terrible), but anything over that starts to get ridiculous. The pace of Haikyuu!! is perfect for me. I also like that the characters are always playing or practicing, so when they improve it actually feels like they've earned it. None of that, "Here's a training montage, and suddenly the team is two times as powerful!" shit. It feels very realistic and easy to follow.
Thanks for your comment! I think I'll try to read the manga as well, though it might be a bit before I get to it. I love this cast so much, I can't imagine it letting me down.
Aww, you didn't make it through the first episode of Kuroko's Basketball? I'm about...15 episodes into the series, I think? TBH I don't find this anime half as good as Haikuu!!, but I am still enjoying it more than I thought I would. The thing that I don't like about Kuroko's Basketball is it focuses so much on the two mains and little on the rest of the team. IMO the mains aren't incredibly interesting but are still fun to watch, but the rest of the team feels pretty flat and undeveloped. Haikyuu!! does a great job of stressing Hinata and Kageyama's importance while still letting other characters have their moments and get development. They feel more like a team, and their friendships and relationships feel more natural.
Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball
I don't normally love the small-and-bubbly main character types but Hinata is just too adorable not to love. And Kageyama is so great - you think he'll be the stereotypical cool and aloof, overly talented deuteragonist but he's actually such a sweet guy who just really fails at socialising X'D
And everyone else is so precious as well - and not just the main team, but the rival teams as well (I am forever in love with Kuroo and Kenma).
YowaPeda wasn't all bad, I guess, but it had this mix of things I really don't like about sports anime (Main character who is so freaky talented he wins against everyone all the time, no matter how much more they trained, constant flashbacks, one race that takes forever and comically OTT character designs and the "antagonist" is just ridiculous).
I think I would read the Haikyuu manga more regularly if there was a physical copy I could read - but the Japanese import is so expensive and it hasn't been licensed in English (only in French and my French is terrible). I don't really like reading manga on a computer screen.
I think one of the main reasons I disliked KnB is because the main character was so ... bland. I mean, he's supposed to be like that, I guess. But yeah. Also, the way they're all colour coded is so weird...
Plus: I don't really like Basketball X''D
Volleyball is at least somehow interesting for me - but sports that don't interest me are hard to watch. It's why I never watched Prince of Tennis and why Yowapeda is so dull to me. (I wish we could have a nice football anime in the style and quality of Haikyuu. Inazuma 11 never looked like something that could interest me.)
Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball
I don't like it when the main character wins all the time either. This is something that I'm hoping doesn't happen in Kuroko's Basketball; I can't tell if it will keep happening or not, but so far no matter what they've won and the training montages aren't convincing me that they're that talented or they have improved that much.
:/ I wish it had been licensed in English, but I'll read on the internet if I have to because I am super curious. I get wanting to hold a copy in your hand, though. I tend to finish books and comics quicker if I have a physical copy.
Haha, yea, Kuroko is kind of bland. Like you said, that's the point of his character, but I understand not being too into him. He's cute at times and I think he is a bit deeper than he lets on, but he isn't a terribly exciting character. The insane hair colors kind of amuse me so far. (I want blue hair.)
I need to see if Prince of Tennis is on Crunchyroll because I actually do like Tennis! Well, I don't watch it or pay any attention to it, but I think I could get into a tennis anime. I would really enjoy any anime that was somewhat like Haikyuu in style and quality, but a soccer/football one in particular would be cool! Maybe one day.
Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball
Earnest is the perfect word for it, absolutely! Even the rival teams are not petty or mean spirited (some individuals aside, maybe, but even they mostly want to win and don't do mean things for the sake of being "evil"). There always is a feeling of respect and also fun underlying their interactions.
I think it's terribly annoying when a main character/main character team wins all the time. In Haikyuu, the win/loss ratio is quite balanced, considering they are a mostly new team that's only just now starting to fight their way back to the top.
I'll keep reading it on the internet as well - no other choice, so far, but I'll definitely buy it once it gets licensed in a language I understand (and where shipping doesn't cost me a fortune).
(Haha, I would love to have blue hair, but I never coloured my hair because it takes so long to grow out again. I've been thinking of trying those weird hair chalks, though XD)
I think PoT is very OTT with the silly special attacks and balls ripping the net because their so fast and silly things like that. But maybe it could be fun if you like Tennis!
I've actually half expected them to make a male figureskating anime for the winter season because of the victory at the Winter Olympics this year XD (like, Free on ice skates haha).
