The reason to not kill isn't as simple as "it makes me the villain". The reason it makes them no better than the villain is often that they are killing in anger, and that is unequivocally wrong. We can agree on that, right? If the hero is in a situation in which the only options are MURDER and CIVILIANS DYING that's because someone wrote it that way, applying that to real life is a dangerous mistake. Killing isn't a simple and obvious solution.
