Likes to Hits ratio

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been staring at my AO3 works page for awhile, and it's kind of made me curious what the average Kudo/Like/Favorite:Hit ratio is.

If you're just going straight stats, my highest-hit fic (Harry Potter) has 612 hits and 26 kudos, or 1 kudo for every 23 hits (1:23). But if you factor hits that in all likelihood are kudo-ers returning for a new chapter, and there are 12 chapters (26x12), it's more like 26 kudos for every 336 hits, or 1 kudo for every 8 hits. That's pretty good, I think.

My newest fic, a Teen Wolf WIP published Aug 4 and last updated Aug. 11, has 11 kudos in 259 hits (1:23), but following the same assumption above, it works out to 11:204 (1:18).

How bout y'all? Share some stats on your most-hit and most-recent fics, if you dare. (I have a feeling I'm going to feel really inadequate by the end of this thread...).

Rather than look at each fic individually, I just took my total hits across all 76 stories (31351) and divided by total kudos (850) to get 1:37.

I do know that my "best" in terms of response to hits is one with the lowest number of hits: a short poem (about an Otto Frello painting) I wrote for yuletide: 91 hits, 6 comments, 7 kudos, which is 1:7. Next best looks to be my most kudoed, a Jurassic Park Muldoon/Clever Girl story, with 1:10.

The Old School Rule of thumb was to feel accomplished if you got a review per every 100 hits.

AYRT

God, what I would give for an actual, honest to god review. Looking at stats as a whole (and ignoring what could be repeat hits), I'm looking at 22 fics with 130 kudos and 3,836 or 1:29.

yeah, my Ao3 comment threads total (which counts only the top level comments for a story, i.e., ignores your replies) is 195, which is 1:160.

I'm thrilled whenever I get an "actual honest to god review" -- it always re-energizes me to continue with a piece -- but I've come to accept that most readers don't bother.

Most of mine are between 12-9 hits per kudos, but it varies by fandom. Some fandoms/pairings are really shit at leaving kudos for some reason, and even the best fics end up with a tiny amount. Some are awesome. I have an Orphan Black fic with a 5:1 ratio. Also, the older your fics are the more out of whack the ratio gets, because people reread and also are less likely to leave kudos on older fic.

eta: I did total hits/kudos and got 15:1, which isn't as low as I thought, SPN fics dragging me down.

I have no idea how it works, and it really differs.

What I noticed: on ff.net multi-chaptered WIPs get more hits than one-shots, while on AO3 it's the reverse (I guess they like WIP's less there)

My last one-shot on AO3 has 100 kudos, 12 comments (but half those are mine, as I reply - so 6 commenter), 1347 hits and 18 bookmarks. So fairly low comment ratio.

My most recent WIP (2 chapters up) has 12 kudo's, 2 comments, 2 bookmarks and 267 hits.

Often I also think it really depends on which pairing you write. the one-shot is explicitly shippy while the WIP is not.

This is roughly how I estimate how good a fic is going to be/whether I should read it:

1 kudos for every 10 hits or less = very good fic
1 kudos for every 20 -30 hits = solid read or undiscovered gem
1 kudos for every 40 - 60 hits = no man's land
1 kudos for every 60 - 100 hits = usually slightly OOC or has many errors
1 kudos for every 100 + hits = usually very OOC or has many errors or both

Things I find throw this system off: when it's a HS AU, ABO, multichaptered, or a crossover with a bigger fandom. Then the kudos/hits ratio is too distorted to gauge.

SA I forgot to add 'originally posted before the inception of AO3'. That always distorts kudos negatively, I find.

Hmmm, I'm right in that no-man's land between the no-man's land and solid read/undiscovered gems. My average is around 1 kudo to every 34 hits.

Just counting hits and kudos on AO3, no factoring in comments or ff.net or anything, total hits is 11,930 and total kudos is 663 for an average 1:18 kudos:hits ratio. My best-ratio'd story is 1:10 for a Hobbit vignette, and my worst is 1:25 for a SPN story.

I don't like to divide kudos up that way, really, but since you were asking: overall, I have about 1 kudos per 26 hits, on my 23 stories. That's in Star Trek, though, for a popular pairing, so I wouldn't consider that a great gauge of quality.

I prefer to divide it up in terms of kudos/word count, because that makes me feel so much better. :) (Which is about 1/70.)

Well, my one for Ace Attorney has a 1:13 ratio. It's pretty popular.

Funny enough, the one in Avengers is 1:13 as well, but it's not as popular. (It has a much lower hit count.)

I blame the difference in that one is a semi-ploty romance and the other is a gen attempted suicide fic. (Also, I've only written one shots so the chapter thing doesn't apply.)

I have a single fic posted on AO3, and its ratio is 1:16. I guess that's...decent?

(It's for a small segment of a small fandom, however, so I have to wonder if some people are reading and liking it simply because it's there)

I don't really look at my stats. I get a kudo on one of my eight fics every day or so, and that's pretty much all I pay attention to.

I've got 93784 total hits for 169 stories and 3333 kudos for a ratio of 1:28. I'm pretty thrilled with that.

i think the average ratio depends entirely on the fandom and the time of posting. from my experience, older fic tends to have a lower ratio and newer fic generally gets more kudos. some fandoms hand kudos out like candy while others are a bit more reserved.

i don't have access to my ao3 atm but my average is probably somewhere around 3% with my best ratios coming from smaller fandoms.

Kudos to hits on all my fics together comes out to about 1:17. My most recent fic has 29 kudos to 360 hits, so about 1:13. Best ratio is at about 1:11. It's actually from an older fic originally written pre-AO3, which I was a little surprised about.

Re: Likes to Hits ratio

Current best ratio is 1:6.5. It isn't even porn.
Current worst is 1:10500+. I'm hoping this might be a fic getting hit by a bot!
Overall is 1:32, which is decent enough for me...

er, that's 1:105.
