I vastly prefer "I just think two dudes together is hot" to any kind of grand justification for slash (and I say this as a slash fan). Yes, sometimes it's two people of the same gender who have the most developed/interesting/intense relationship and yes, sometimes there aren't many opposite-sex candidates for shipping, but you have to go on a case-by-case basis. I've come across people who use reasons like "There aren't any good female characters to pair the guys with" as a blanket excuse and I think, "Okay, if this were a 40 year-old buddy-cop show with two male leads, I might agree with you there, but not if it's a contemporary ensemble show with multiple main characters of both sexes. If you don't like any of the female characters or don't see chemistry between them and the male characters, fine, but don't act like they aren't there. Just admit you want to see two dudes going at it."

Fortunately, I haven't seen this in a while. I think people are increasingly comfortable with admitting an interest in same-sex pairings for their own sake.

I don't ship for hotness, I ship because the characters interact in a way I like. I also don't think there's a need to justify shipping anything.
