The reason these "Christians" you interact with say that, OP, is because they don't bother to actually read the book they thump.

FWIW, the standard Christian references boggle me, too, b/c I am not "standard Christian" -- so I don't get the jokes or the references, and using Wikipedia as a resource is like peering into an abyss shaped like a rabbit hole...and then the rabbit hole stares back...
