But I need to remember that a lot of other people are choosing their fics based on what they think is hottest rather than what they think is interesting in whatever other way.

Also, I'm sorry that you're treated that way (and, thinking back on it, it is kind of true. When I had a girlfriend, so many of my guy friends got...weird. In a really off-putting way).

For example, I do ship all sort of pairings, but as someone who is interested in men sexually, the way I experience different pairings in fandom does differ.
Now let's take two pairs I like (and let's take canon ones before the canon police arrives): Willow/Tara from Buffy and Justin/Brian from QAF.
Now, while a really ship both these on a romantic level, I only ship the latter on a sexual level. So I'll only read Willow/Tara if I want something cute or fluffy, or something that explores the characters more. Now, I'll also read Justin/Brian fluff, but I'll mainly go looking for really hot porn. And since I consume more porn than fluff or gen, that's just what I'll mostly be browsing.
So in that sense, my fandom shipping consumption will skew really heavily to male slash.
And het will fall somewhere between the two, and gen will sort of dangle a bit behind for where I just really feel like plot.
But in that sense, I can sort of understand people dropping certain types of pairings altogether if they only r mainly want erotica.
