The second book in an urban fantasy series I like ties a secondary character's mathematical genius into magic in a way I utterly failed to comprehend. Near the end she used a notorious mathematical formula to...free some kind of ancient evil, I think. Need to re-read that book. Anyway, it was called "Frost Moon" by Anthony Francis, might give you some ideas.
