I find it disappointing (to say the least) when Christians think that emulating Christ means developing a big ol' martyr complex.

Same. It seems to be taking the wrong message from Christianity altogether. Unfortunately, people like making martyrs out of themselves and being the underdog, which is why you still get people in the U.S. throwing tantrums about nonsense like the "War on Christmas" or "removing God from schools".

...it doesn't? Least, it's not Christ they're emulating, at any rate. And most of them who do take that attitude (problem) need to be smacked down with God's epic speech from the latter half of the book of Job. (I refer to God's speech to Job.) Er. IMNSHO.
