If I understand correctly, you're sad that fandom prefers OT3s over infidelity. I hope I'm reading that right, or the rest of my comments are going to make no sense.

The reason I prefer the opposite is largely a matter of consent. In an OT3, you have three people all agreeing to a polyamourous relationship. In infidelity, the person cheating knows what is up, but either one or both of the others, by definition, do not know and thus have not agreed. That's where infidelity fics stop being pleasant for me.
