Where are you finding this prevalence of OT3 fic/art? But yeah, infidelity isn't going to be a huge thing, because it tends to result in characters looking like assholes, and most people don't want their favs to, you know, look like assholes.

I kinda feel like you're conflating two different issues here? Like, a shipping problem and a kink problem. Because you can solve the OT3 problem by having the characters break up with each other, but that wouldn't give you the infidelity that you apparently have a kink for.

IDK. It just seems like you really mostly just want more infidelity-kink fic. Which is fine, although not my bucket of tea personally.

I agree with you. I actually do have OT3's that I enjoy, but with a lot characters it just doesn't work for me. It's kind of annoying when someone goes "an OT3 will solve all the pairing conflicts" because...no. That just makes it seem forced.

I think infidelity hits too close to home for many. Fic is in the end wish-fulfilment. We don't want to read about things that make us miserable.

Ahaha for reals though, what is even your qualifier for "surprising amount". A lot of ot3 sound great in theory, and meta too, but I don't think I've read much where it was even executed in a way that interested me (personal taste whatever). I read more shippings where a canon couple is broken up, cheating happens, but since infidelity isn't the focus it isn't classified as such. I'd love to read more infidelity though, and all the betrayal and sadness and stuff that comes with it.

Some people like threesomes and poly and open relationships. That's not the same as saying no one can have an infidelity kink or that there can't be fic of it. Not wanting to read infidelity fic isn't even saying that.

Ok is it just me, or has there been a whole bunch of secrets along this line (having a kink for cheating/partner betrayal/adultery) lately? I almost said something on yesterday's secret. I mean, it doesn't bother me, but it does make me curious if these are all coming from one anon, or if it's just coincidence that they all seem to be coming so close together.

I can tell you, sometimes that is not the case. Infidelity does not necessarily squick me or bother me (though I do find it OOC for some characters). In any case, it's not either/or. I can read both infidelity or OT3, they are not even related in my mind.

In my case, I like OT3, when in very rare cases, I love the dynamic. This can probably be traced back to my childhood (and later college years) where I was part of a band of three. While it wasn't sexual in my case, that dynamic still resonates with me very strongly, because it reminds me of friendship and good times.

It's not the copout alternative to infidelity.

Two things:

First, some people ship OT3s because they genuinely like the dynamic between three characters. I myself am in that boat: there are three characters whom I just can't separate. They all care about each other and work together in such a way that it's impossible for me to break them into pairings.

Second, I would venture to guess that more people have experienced infidelity than have experienced incest. It's therefore a more common squick. It's perfectly fine to have a kink for it, but people who've been hurt by it are naturally going to try to find ways to get around it.

I'd be the reverse of you, then. I'm usually much happier about an OT3 plotline than about an infidelity plotline. Not because it's an RL bugbear or anything, I just get really annoyed by romantic plots that milk dishonesty for drama, and infidelity plots usually have that up the wazoo for obvious reasons. Failing OT3, I'll take an upfront open relationship and/or an honest break-up over the drawn out drama you see with a lot of fictional infidelity.

However, that's a matter of taste, and I can see why you'd be annoyed that it's hard to find fics for your tropes/kinks. I won't wish for less OT3, but I can maybe hope you find a corner of fandom that caters to your tastes?

If I understand correctly, you're sad that fandom prefers OT3s over infidelity. I hope I'm reading that right, or the rest of my comments are going to make no sense.

The reason I prefer the opposite is largely a matter of consent. In an OT3, you have three people all agreeing to a polyamourous relationship. In infidelity, the person cheating knows what is up, but either one or both of the others, by definition, do not know and thus have not agreed. That's where infidelity fics stop being pleasant for me.

Ok, so first of all , I really don't want to start any shipping wank here. I just want to explain why I love ot3+ pairings and gush, because honestly, I don't get to do this enough. IGNORE ME!
I love 3 and more pairings mostly because I love, love, love genfic. Does that seem weird? I guess it does. But this is very little genfic that is good out there, and team shipping allows for the same sort of 'everyone loves and supports each other' dynamic that I really like in gen fics. Avengers, Teen Wolf, Harry Potter, these are all fandoms in which the shipping wars almost always get in the was of the friendship feels.
OTwhatever fics give that same sense of comraderie. People in this group love each other and support each other and would go to the ends of the earth for more than one person. The fics give me the great big fuzzies.
Also, hot orgy sex.

I can't say I'm fond of your kink, OP, but I kind of understand the frustration that the default solution is a polyamorous relationship, or the ease with which fictional polyamory always seems to work out.

Me, I wish there were more peaceful can-we-stay-friends break-ups (or divorces) out there in the world of fanfiction, because things don't always work out and first loves aren't always forever. But, it seems drama is easier to write and more... well, dramatic. :/

Sorry you have trouble finding fics with your kink though. Not being able to find the kind of fic you want sucks.
