I know people might tout OT3s as a solution to love triangles or shipping dilemmas, but is OT3 fic really super common, at least for any given pairing? Personally, when I come across a trio I'd like to see together (rare) there never seems to be enough fic for it to satisfy and certainly not more of it than fic with cheating or break-ups or character-bashing or tragic deaths or AUs or whatever other alternatives people come up with. Probably depends on the fandom. (I somehow get the impression there's a lot of OT3 fic in MCU fandom, but I haven't been reading fic for that.)

They're not super common in general but the White Collar fandom is filled with OT3 fic (I assume due to a combination of Neal, El, and Peter all having chemistry with each other and the fact that the fandom generally likes El a great deal and didn't want to kill her off, have her divorce Peter or ignore her existence so they could make Peter/Neal work)

Well there is an MCU tag for "Everyone is poly because Avengers" so... that's probably where that idea comes from.

But I agree, generally speaking, OT3+ are not really overtaking any fandoms (White Collar excluded) including the MCU stuff.
