Usenet. alt.tv.x-files. I can tell you some tales. I hit the group at about the same time X-Files was becoming wildly popular, and so there were literally thousands of messages per day, with everything from straight-up spam, to BNFs and wannabe BNFs, to seriously out-there conspiracy theorists, to everyone in between. Flamewars? Yeah, there were a few. Though I can only recall the ones I was involved in. :-P
